A message from the Bananagrams organisers.

I received an email from the organisers of the Bananagrams Challenge:

All the children (and their families) had a really super day.  The Bananagrams team were just astounded by the level of skill and breadth of vocabuary that all the finalists showed.  In fact they were all so fast at playing the game that the day finished an hour ahead of schedule!

All the finalists were extremely good sports, congratulating their opponents if they didn't win and were all genuinely a credit to their schools.

Our worthy winner, the UK's first top banana, was 10-year-old Louis Webber from Amersham in Buckinghmashire.  I think everyone at the event will agree, he was a very worthy winnerwith quite mind-boggling ability to 'peel' at the speed of light!  Needless to say, all 12 finalists at the event did extremely well to get to the final - beating nearly16,000 school children for a place.

Lots of parents have asked us for copies of photos from the day, so I am pleased to be able to share with you a link to all the photos from the day.  Please feel free to download any of the photos in the link below:

The password to access the photographs is an anagram of:

The password is all lowercase with no spaces (I thought you might like that Pranav).

Was the Industrial Revolution a good thing or a bad thing?

Our final piece of work for our History topic will be to consider whether we believe that the Industrial Revolution was a good thing or a bad thing.

We've looked at health and illnesses; how children were forced to work in terrible conditions; the effect that industry had on the environment and the living conditions of the poor.  We understand how the rise of industry forced people out of the countryside and into the emerging towns and cities and we've thought a little about how scary the massive changes must have been for the people involved.

I've added a clip from the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics - it is quite a powerful clip.  The man that you see at the beginning an at various points throughout the clip represents Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Part-way through the clip, about 7 minutes in, the music changes for about a minute and a half - listen out for the whistling and the drums no longer being played.  Why do you think the music changes in this way?

Do you think that the producers involved with the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics consider the Industrial Revolution to have been a good thing for England?  What is it about the way the clip is choreographed that makes you think this?

The Children who Built Victorian Britain

Have a look at these clips.  They are the ones we have been looking at in our History lessons this week and will help you in your learning in English next week.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Clip one looks at children in industry; clip two looks at children in agriculture; clip three looks at children at war.

In our English over the next couple of weeks, we will be creating scripts and recording emotive podcasts.  The most effective will be posted here.

It would be useful to others if you could summarise the key information from the clips in your comments so that we can refer to it in our research.

These clips are from the series, 'The Worst Jobs in History'.
